Adventure Equipment induction
Safety
Adventuring is great fun and there are so many places to explore, we want to help you stay safe particularly on the water and have an enjoyable experience. Hot Water Beach can be VERY DANGEROUS in the wrong conditions, there have been many drownings at this beach over the years and I have come very close myself on two occasions. Treat it with respect, check the forecast and operate within your personal limits and you will remain safe and have a great time.
Kayaking
Kayaking is great fun, and there are so many places to explore. We want to help you stay safe on the water and have an enjoyable experience. Try and limit your adventure to half a day when there are other guests around, they may want to use them as well.
Transporting the kayaks with your vehicle is when they are most likely to suffer damage, please use the roof racks attachments provided and do not attempt to load them directly on your vehicle roof. When loading two fit people are required to lift the kayaks into place, secure firmly with two tie-down straps per kayak, and stop to check your load if driving a distance.
Know your limits. Understand your skill and fitness level, and avoid dangerous situations before they arise
The boats are very stable but if you do capsize don’t be alarmed, the boats are easy to roll. Grip the moulded handle on the size and use your body weight to right the kayak.
Secure equipment. Use the leashes provided or store equipment in the hold.
Watch out for others. Look out for boats and other water goers, you are responsible for your safety and theirs.
Lifejackets. When using the kayaks outside of the stream, lifejackets are mandatory.
Check the weather forecast before you head out. If the surf is up, there are other beaches with shelter. For more information and the forecast, visit metservice.com.
If you are planning on heading out further than 100m from the shoreline or on a lengthy paddle, then please contact the coastguard before your trip and when you return. A great way to do this is through the Coastguard app.
Paddle in safe areas. Stick close to the shoreline when going paddling or fishing, and remember no fishing in the reserve
Watersports
Paddle Boarding. Take care when loading the boards onto the vehicle. Avoid leaving them in the sun; cover with a towel if staying on the beach. Watch out for rocks!
There are strong rips at Hot Water Beach, learn where these are before you head out.
There are rocks in the stream and around the shore at Hot Water Beach. Stay 305 meters away at all times.
Surfing. Pick the right board for your skill level, don’t go out if the surf is too big.
FISHING
Beach carts. Please do not overload or ride on the carts; they are not designed for it and will fail.
Tackle. We supply a limited amount of tackle. Take care, if it runs out, you will need to purchase your own.
Rods. Fishing rods are designed to work up to 45 45-degree angle between the line and the rod; if you lift them further, they will snap under load.
Reels. Reels will quickly become damaged if submerged in water or placed in the sand. Please use the holders provided. Rinse lightly with fresh water after use.
Floundering. Walk side by side when spearing for flounder to prevent injury. Take torches and watch out for the tide changes.
Please abide by the Auckland - Kermadec area bag limits. We love our marine areas and want to make sure that they are protected for future generations to come, if we see any infringements, we will be obligated to report them. Check out the size and bag limits for our area here.
e bikes
Ride single file. Cars often won’t be able to see you before they are close. Ride single file and on the shoulder where possible.
Always wear a helmet on or off-road.
Ride to your ability. If you are hitting the tracks and trails, please ride within your ability.
Our bikes are powered with a massive 500Wh battery and have a minimum range of 65km and a maximum range of 180km so you are set to tour the countryside with ease. Weight of the rider, packed equipment, and the terrain all play a part in the effective range, so take what you need only and be aware of the conditions you are traversing to ensure you have plenty of battery to help you get home.
We encourage you to get out and enjoy the area on the E-Bikes. Please lock them up around the frame with the locks provided if you are going to leave them while you go into a shop or for a walk. We provide a tow ball-mounted bike rack only, so if you don't have a tow ball on your car, be sure to pack your boot-mounted rack before you leave home. This will help you get to the areas you want to ride easily.
Check out the trails at Whiti Bike Park or ride / drive to the ferry to cruise around town for the day.
Please try to limit your adventure to half a day when there are other guests around, as they may want to use them as well.
